Benefits
What Is Teeth Whitening?
Teeth whitening is a cosmetic treatment that lightens the natural colour of your teeth. A whitening gel containing a bleaching agent is applied to the teeth, where it breaks down stains on and within the enamel. Professional whitening at a dental clinic uses stronger, controlled gels than shop-bought products, with your gums protected throughout.
Over time teeth darken from tea, coffee, red wine, smoking, some medicines and age. Whitening reverses much of this, but how much lighter your teeth become depends on their starting shade and the type of staining.
What causes teeth to stain?
Surface stains come from what we eat, drink and smoke: tea, coffee, red wine, turmeric, paan and tobacco. Deeper stains come from inside the tooth. With age the enamel thins and the yellower layer underneath shows through. Some medicines taken in childhood, too much fluoride, or an injury to a tooth can also change its colour from within. Whitening works best on yellowish and age-related staining. Grey or patchy internal staining responds less, and a single dark tooth may need a different approach.
Professional whitening or home remedies?
Whitening toothpastes, charcoal powders and remedies such as lemon or baking soda mostly work by scrubbing the surface. They can lift light surface stains, but they do not change the natural shade of the tooth, and abrasive or acidic remedies can wear the enamel and make teeth more sensitive over time. Professional whitening changes the shade itself, under a dentist's supervision.
Benefits of professional teeth whitening
A visibly brighter smile, often after one in-clinic session
Supervised by a dentist, with your gums protected
Treats stains from tea, coffee, smoking and age
Safer and more even than unsupervised shop-bought kits
No drilling and no change to the shape of your teeth
A good first step before deciding on veneers or crowns
Why a dental check comes first
Whitening works best on healthy teeth. Cavities, cracked fillings or gum problems can make whitening uncomfortable, so we check your teeth first. A professional teeth cleaning before whitening removes surface stains and tartar, which helps the gel work evenly.
Ideal Candidate
Who Needs Teeth Whitening?
Whitening suits adults with healthy teeth and gums whose teeth have become yellow or stained over time. It is a cosmetic choice, made for how you want your smile to look.
Signs you may need it
Teeth that look yellow or dull in photos
Stains from tea, coffee, red wine or smoking
Teeth that have gradually darkened with age
An upcoming wedding, event or interview
You are planning crowns or veneers and want to set the shade first
Whitening is also popular before weddings. If you are planning it for your wedding, book two to three weeks before the event, so there is time for a cleaning first and a second session if you want a lighter shade.
When it is not suitable
Whitening may not be advised:
during pregnancy or while breastfeeding
with untreated cavities, gum disease or exposed roots
for children and young teenagers
when the front teeth have crowns, veneers or large fillings, because these do not change colour
for some deep internal stains, such as grey staining from certain medicines
For stains that whitening cannot lift, dental veneers or bonding may work better. We will explain the alternatives if whitening is not right for you.
Process Overview
The Teeth Whitening Procedure at Dental Life
In-clinic whitening is usually done in a single visit of about one to one and a half hours. Some patients choose a second session for a lighter result.
Step 1: Consultation and diagnosis
We check your teeth and gums, note any fillings or crowns on your front teeth, and record your starting shade so you can compare the result. If you have fillings or crowns on your front teeth, we explain how they may look next to your whitened teeth. We tell you what result to expect, and the cost, before we begin.
Step 2: The treatment
Your lips and gums are protected with a barrier so that only the teeth are exposed. The whitening gel is applied to the front surfaces of your teeth and left for a set time, usually in a few rounds, under your dentist's supervision. The gel is then removed and your new shade is checked against your starting shade.
You can relax in the chair during the treatment, and we check that you are comfortable between rounds.
Step 3: Recovery and aftercare
Some sensitivity to cold for a day or two is common and usually settles on its own. A sensitivity toothpaste can help.
Aftercare tips:
For 48 hours, avoid tea, coffee, red wine, cola, turmeric-rich food and smoking
Use a sensitivity toothpaste if your teeth feel sensitive
Keep brushing twice a day and clean between your teeth daily
Have regular professional cleanings to keep the result longer
